Unlike every other major temple in South India, Sabarimala is not open every day. The 18-degree hill shrine in Kerala follows the traditional Malayalam calendar and opens only on specific auspicious days — primarily the Mandala season (November–December) and Makaravilakku (January). For the 2026-27 season, the Mandala period begins in November 2026. Virtual Queue booking at sabarimalaonline.org opens November 1. Without a Virtual Queue coupon during peak season, entry to Sannidhanam is not permitted.

Mandala Season vs Makaravilakku — What’s the Difference
This is the most common confusion for first-time Sabarimala pilgrims.
| Mandala Season | Makaravilakku Season | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | ~41 days | ~3 weeks |
| 2026 Dates | ~Nov 16 – Dec 27, 2026 | ~Dec 30, 2026 – Jan 20, 2027 |
| Significance | Lord Ayyappa’s annual retreat period ends | Makara Jyothi miracle + Makaravilakku festival |
| Crowd | Very high | Extreme — Makara Jyothi day is biggest |
| Makara Jyothi | No | Jan 14, 2027 — miraculous light appears |
| Virtual Queue | Mandatory | Mandatory |
41 days = one cycle: Pilgrims who observe the 41-day Vratham (vow/fast) arrive at Sabarimala during this combined season. The Mandala season IS the traditional pilgrimage window.

The 41-Day Vratham — Preparation Before Sabarimala
Sabarimala is not just a temple visit — it is a pilgrimage that requires 41 days of spiritual preparation.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Duration | 41 days before the pilgrimage |
| Dress | Black or dark blue dhoti continuously |
| Diet | Vegetarian only — no meat, fish, eggs, alcohol |
| Behaviour | Celibacy, restraint, meditation, daily Ayyappa prayers |
| Name | “Swami” — all pilgrims address each other as Swami |
| Initiation | Begins at a local Ayyappa temple — Guru Swami initiates |
Who can skip the 41 days? Traditionally, the full Vratham is required for the first Sabarimala pilgrimage (Kanni Ayyappan). Repeat pilgrims who have already completed the first Sabarimala visit may observe a shorter version — check with your local Ayyappa temple.
Irumudi Kettu — The Sacred Bundle
Every Sabarimala pilgrim carries an Irumudi Kettu — a two-compartment cloth bundle that is inseparable from the pilgrimage.
| Compartment | Contents |
|---|---|
| Front (Sacred) | Coconut filled with ghee — offered to Lord Ayyappa at Sannidhanam |
| Back (Practical) | Personal items, prasadam, travel necessities |
The Irumudi Kettu is carried on the head — it is not placed on the ground. This is a strict rule. The bundle must be prepared correctly under the guidance of an experienced Guru Swami.
No entry without Irumudi: Pilgrims without the Irumudi Kettu are not permitted to climb to Sannidhanam. This is enforced at Pamba checkpoint.
Makara Jyothi — January 14 — The Miraculous Light
Makara Jyothi (January 14, 2027) is the spiritual peak of the entire Sabarimala season.
On Makaravilakku day — which coincides with Makar Sankranti — a bright star (the Makara Jyothi) appears in the night sky over the Kantamala Hill to the northeast of the Sabarimala shrine. This star appears exactly when the temple priests perform the Makaravilakku ritual.
Millions of pilgrims believe this is a divine manifestation that has appeared on the same night every year for centuries. Astronomical explanations attribute it to Canopus (the second-brightest star). Whatever the interpretation — the sight of millions of pilgrims falling to their knees simultaneously in the dark Kerala forest as the light appears is one of the most moving sights in all of India.
For Makara Jyothi 2027: Book Virtual Queue slots at sabarimalaonline.org from November 1, 2026. This is the most sought-after slot of the season — book immediately on the first day.
The Trek — Pamba to Sannidhanam
| Stage | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Pamba → Sannidhanam | ~5 km | 1.5–2 hours |
| Route | Forest steps + Neelimala trail | Steep, well-maintained |
| Facilities | Food stalls, toilets, medical posts en route | — |
Erumeli alternate route: Traditional pilgrims start from Erumeli — 11 km longer, passes through Erumeli mosque (unique interfaith tradition). Adds 1–2 days to the pilgrimage.
No vehicles from Pamba: All pilgrims walk — no exceptions. Even VIPs walk the 5 km.
The Sabarimala Trap — What First-Timers Don’t Know
Most first-time Sabarimala pilgrims don’t know that the temple is NOT open during their planned visit window. They book tickets to Kochi in November, plan to go to Sabarimala — and only then discover that the temple opens only from November 16. Or they plan in March, not knowing the temple is closed from late January until the next Mandala season.
Sabarimala is open approximately 60-70 days a year — primarily Mandala + Makaravilakku + monthly 5-day poojas.
2026-27 Fix:
- Mandala season: ~November 16 – December 27, 2026
- Makaravilakku: ~December 30, 2026 – January 20, 2027
- Monthly poojas: ~5 days each month
- All other days: closed
Always check sabarimalaonline.org for confirmed opening dates before booking travel.

Common Errors + Fixes
“November mein Sabarimala jaana tha — band tha” → Fix: Sabarimala opens ~November 16, not November 1. Confirm exact date at sabarimalaonline.org.
“Virtual Queue compulsory hai kya” → Fix: Yes — mandatory during Mandala and Makaravilakku seasons. Without it, entry to Sannidhanam is refused at Pamba checkpoint.
“Agent se ticket lena pada — kya sahi hai” → Fix: No agents authorised. Virtual Queue is completely free at sabarimalaonline.org. Paying an agent is unnecessary and potentially fraudulent.
“Irumudi Kettu kaise banate hain” → Fix: Must be prepared under guidance of a Guru Swami (experienced pilgrim who has done the Sabarimala yatra before). Your local Ayyappa temple can connect you with a Guru Swami.
“Makara Jyothi kab hoti hai 2027” → Fix: January 14, 2027. This is Makaravilakku night — the most crowded day. Book Virtual Queue November 1, 2026 immediately when it opens.
