Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — founder of the Maratha Empire — was a devout worshipper of Tulja Bhavani. The Goddess was his Kuldevi — his family’s protecting deity, worshipped through generations.
Before his major military campaigns, Shivaji Maharaj would seek the Goddess’s blessings at Tuljapur. Devotees believe that Goddess Bhavani herself appeared and gifted Shivaji Maharaj the legendary Bhavani Tulwar (Bhavani sword) — which he carried into battle and which is now preserved at a museum.
