The Goddess at Balkampet is 10 feet below ground level. You do not look up at her — you look down. The idol sits in a sunken chamber, and devotees descend to her level. At the base of the idol, sacred water collects — this water is distributed as prasadam, taken by devotees throughout the year. Every Tuesday and Friday, at exactly 6:45 AM, Abhishekam begins. Priya, a software engineer from Gachibowli, drove across Hyderabad every Tuesday for six months to reach this Abhishekam. The Tuesday she arrived at 7:15 AM, she had missed the start by 30 minutes. Nobody had told her: 6:45 AM is when it begins. And nobody had given her the contact number — 040-2370 4311 — to call and confirm before leaving home. This guide does both.

The Idol Below Ground — Unique Feature
Balkampet Yellamma’s most extraordinary physical feature:
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Depth | 10 feet below ground level |
| Experience | Devotees look DOWN at Goddess |
| Sacred water | Collects naturally at the base of idol |
| Prasadam | This water — distributed to devotees |
| Symbolism | Earth-goddess form — emerging from the ground |
This makes Balkampet Yellamma one of the few temples in Hyderabad where the divine is worshipped from above — a profound inversion of the usual temple experience.
The Story of Balkampet — Why It Was Founded
In the mid-18th century, a plague swept through Hyderabad and Secunderabad, killing thousands. A military regiment of the Hyderabad region was on campaign in Ujjain, under the East India Company. They prayed to Maha Kalika Devi at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain. The Goddess was appeased. When the soldiers returned, they installed Yellamma temples at Balkampet, Golconda, and other locations to honour the divine protection. Balkampet Yellamma temple was built on this vow.
The legend connects Yellamma Devi to the mythology of Renuka Mata — mother of Parashurama — explaining why Goddess Yellamma is also worshipped as the embodiment of divine justice.
