It took 26 years to build. Construction began in 1970. The doors opened in February 1996. The Birla Mandir in Kolkata — বিড়লা মন্দির — rises 160 feet above Ballygunge on Ashutosh Chowdhury Avenue, built from Rajasthani sandstone and white marble brought from across India, interior walls engraved with verses from the Bhagavad Gita, ceiling fitted with Belgian glass and silver artifacts, artisans from Agra, Mirzapur and Muzaffarpur commissioned for the stone carvings. After sunset, the entire structure is illuminated — and becomes one of Kolkata’s most breathtaking sights.

The Architecture — 26 Years in the Making
The Birla Mandir Kolkata is not a quick commission. It was a 26-year labour of devotion.
Exterior: Rajasthani cream-coloured sandstone. Three towering Shikharas (domes) with intricate mythological carvings. The style draws from the Lingaraj Temple, Bhubaneswar — but updated with modern precision.
Interior: Entire interior is white marble. The walls carry Bhagavad Gita shlokas engraved in stone — pictorial scenes depicting key moments from the Gita. Ceilings fitted with Belgian glass chandeliers and silver electric diyas.
Artisans: Stone-cutters and engravers were specifically commissioned from Agra, Mirzapur, and Muzaffarpur — the master craftsmen of Indian stone work.
The result: A temple that looks and feels different from every angle — morning, afternoon, evening, night.
All Deities — Not Just Radha-Krishna
Most visitors focus on the central Radha-Krishna sanctum. But Birla Mandir Kolkata houses multiple deities:
| Deity | Location in Temple |
|---|---|
| Radha-Krishna | Main sanctum — central |
| Goddess Durga + Shakti | Left dome |
| Lord Shiva (in meditation) | Right dome |
| Lord Ganesha | Separate shrine |
| Lord Hanuman | Separate shrine |
| Ten Avatars of Vishnu | Panel engravings throughout |
