At Parli Vaijnath, you can touch the Shivalinga. Not through a priest, not through water alone — you can place your hands directly on the 9th Jyotirlinga and perform Abhishekam yourself. This is rare among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Most restrict direct contact to priests. Here, every devotee can. The legend makes this even more significant: Lord Vishnu, during the churning of the cosmic ocean, hid the immortality nectar — Amrit — and Dhanvantari (the divine physician) inside this very Shivalinga. This is why the temple is also known as Dhanvantari and Amriteshwari. The nectar of immortality. The physician of the gods. Housed in a Hemadpanthi stone temple on a small hill in Beed district, Maharashtra — renovated by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar in 1706.

The Amrit Legend — Why Dhanvantari + Amriteshwari
This legend makes Parli Vaijnath unique among all 12 Jyotirlingas:
During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), the immortality nectar — Amrit — emerged. Lord Vishnu, to protect it from the demons, hid both the Amrit and Dhanvantari (the divine physician, bearer of Amrit) inside the Shivalinga at Parli.
This is why the temple carries two additional names:
- Dhanvantari — the divine physician (related to healing)
- Amriteshwari — the lord/goddess of immortality nectar
The healing energy associated with this temple is directly linked to this legend — the immortality nectar is believed to reside within the Jyotirlinga itself.
The Ravana Legend
The second major legend associated with Parli:
Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, was a devoted Shiva bhakta. He performed severe penance to acquire a Shivalinga directly from Kailash. Lord Shiva, pleased, gave him a Shivalinga — with one condition: it must not be placed on the ground during the journey. Lord Ganesha (or Varuna, in some versions) tricked Ravana into placing it down — at which point it became immovable.
Parli’s Jyotirlinga is connected to the tradition of Shivalingas associated with Ravana’s devotion.

Rani Ahilyabai Holkar — The Temple’s Restorer
Rani Ahilyabai Holkar — the 18th century Maratha queen of Malwa — is credited with restoring or renovating dozens of Hindu temples across India, including Kashi Vishwanath. Parli Vaijnath was renovated under her patronage in 1706.
The current Hemadpanthi-style stone structure that stands today — on a small hill surrounded by a protective wall — owes its form to this renovation.
