Sringeri Temple Timings 2026 — Guru Pada Puja, Sevas & Complete Guide | sringeri.net

Sringeri is one of four Peethas established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The other three are at Badrinath (Joshimath), Puri, and Dwaraka. Sringeri is the southernmost — set on the banks of the Tunga River in the Western Ghats — and it is the seat of the Dakshinamnaya Sharada Peetham. The presiding deity is Goddess Sharadamba — the Goddess of Knowledge — who is worshipped in a gold idol commissioned during the Vijayanagara Empire. The Guru Pada Puja performed here is not simply a religious ritual — it is a direct act of devotion to an unbroken lineage of Shankaracharyas that has continued for 1,200 years.

Why Sringeri Among 4 Peethas

Adi Shankaracharya established 4 Amnaya Peethas to protect and propagate Advaita Vedanta:

Peetha Location Direction Deity
Dakshinamnaya Sringeri South Sharadamba
Puramnaya Puri, Odisha East Govardhanpitha
Uttaramnaya Joshimath North Kalika
Paschimamnaya Dwaraka West Kalika

Sringeri is the Dakshinamnaya (Southern) Peetha — directly established by Shankaracharya himself. The lineage of Shankaracharya here has been unbroken since the 8th century.

Adi Shankaracharya arrived at this spot on the Tunga River in the 8th century — and found a sight that stopped him. A frog, about to give birth, was being shaded from the sun by a cobra spreading its hood. Enemies — yet in that moment, in harmony. He took it as a sign. He built the Peetham here. The Sharadamba idol was installed. The Jagadguru lineage began. It has not broken since. Come for Guru Pada Puja at ₹500. Check the Jagadguru’s schedule at sringeri.net/schedule. Sri Gurubhyo Namaha!
