For over 600 years, the original idol of Goddess Jogulamba was hidden. In the 14th century, during the Bahmani Sultan invasions, priests secretly removed the Goddess and placed her inside the Bala Brahmeswara Temple for safety — concealed within the structure, unknown to invaders, unknown to most devotees. For six centuries, the prayers at Alampur continued — but the original idol was elsewhere. In 2005, after archaeological confirmation, the Goddess was restored — a new temple built at the exact original site, the idol returned to her home after 600 years. The Goddess who was hidden for six centuries now stands at Alampur, at the confluence of the Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers, accepting darshan from 6:00 AM. She is the 5th of India’s 18 Maha Shakti Peethas — the spot where Sati’s upper teeth fell to earth. She waits.

The 600-Year Hidden Idol — The Story

| 7th century CE | Temple built — Badami Chalukya kings |
| 14th century | Bahmani Sultan invasion — priests hide original idol |
| Hidden | Idol placed inside Bala Brahmeswara Temple — stays for 600+ years |

The 5th Shakti Peetha — Sati’s Upper Teeth
Alampur’s place in the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas:
| # | Shakti Peetha | Location | What Fell |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hingula | Balochistan | Brahmarandhra |
| 2 | Sharkara Devi | Sri Lanka | Upper teeth |
| 3 | Sugandha | Shikarpur, WB | Nose |
| 4 | Mahalakshmi | Kolhapur | — |
| 5 | Jogulamba | Alampur, Telangana | Upper Teeth (दंत) |
| … | … | … | … |
| 18 | … | … | … |
The mythology: When Sati died, Lord Shiva carried her body and danced in grief. Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to cut the body into pieces — each piece fell to earth and became a Shakti Peetha. Sati’s upper teeth fell at Alampur.
Goddess Jogulamba — Her Fierce Form
Unlike most Devi temples, Jogulamba is worshipped in a fierce (Ugra) form:
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Form | Naked avatar — intense energy |
| Seated on | Corpse (Shava) |
| On head | Scorpion, frog, lizard |
| Tongue | Stretched outside |
| Meaning | “Yogula Amma” = Mother of Yogis |
| Name | Grants Siddhi in Yoga |
This Ugra form is not for the faint-hearted — the Goddess in her full power, destroying illusion. Nearby water from the Tungabhadra is said to cool the intense energy around the shrine.
