Kalighat Kali Temple Darshan Timings 2026 — Aarti Schedule, VIP Pass & Complete Guide | কালীঘাট মন্দির

Kolkata is named after Kalighat. The city’s name derives directly from this temple — “Kali” + “Ghat” (the riverbank steps where Goddess Kali is worshipped). This is not a minor historical footnote. It means that one of India’s largest cities — a metropolis of 15 million people — carries the name of a single temple in its southern neighbourhood. That temple, built on the spot where Sati’s right toes are believed to have fallen when Shiva carried her body across the cosmos, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and the spiritual heart of Bengal.

Why Kalighat — Sati’s Right Toes

Of all the 51 Shakti Peethas across India, Kalighat holds a unique distinction.

According to the Puranas, when Sati — Lord Shiva’s consort — immolated herself after her father Daksha insulted Lord Shiva, Shiva carried her body across the cosmos in grief, performing the Rudra Tandava (cosmic dance of destruction). Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to cut Sati’s body into 51 pieces to release Shiva from his grief. Each piece fell at a different location — each of which became a Shakti Peetha.

At Kalighat — the toes of Sati’s right foot fell.

A Brahmin named Atma Ram found a toe-shaped stone structure in the Bhagirathi River, guided by a ray of light. He established worship here — and this became the foundation of Kalighat temple.

The idol inside the sanctum is extraordinarily large — a towering, fierce form of Maa Kali with a long golden tongue, silver arms, and the characteristic Kali iconography. Darshan here is an intense experience.
