The idol at Mahurgad is only a head. No body — just the head of Goddess Renuka emerging from the earth. According to the legend, after Parashurama cremated his father and performed last rites, Goddess Renuka’s spirit began rising from the earth to return to her son. A divine voice had instructed Parashurama: walk away, don’t look back. She will follow. He walked. He heard her footsteps behind him — and then silence. Unable to contain himself, he turned. She stopped. Only her head had emerged from the earth. And so she stayed — as just a head, rising from the ground — worshipped by Parashurama, and ever since by the devotees who climb 250 stone steps to reach her. This is Mahurgad — mother of the warrior with the axe. The third of the Sade Teen Shakti Peethas.

The Head Idol — Why Only a Head?
The most extraordinary feature of Mahurgad.
The legend:
After Parashurama’s father Sage Jamadagni was killed by King Sahastrarjuna’s soldiers, Goddess Renuka died of grief. Parashurama, consumed by rage, defeated the king and performed 21 rounds of warrior vengeance. After cremating his father, he prayed for his mother’s return.
A divine voice said: “Walk away. Don’t look back. Your mother will follow.”
Parashurama walked. He heard her footsteps. Then silence. He turned.
Goddess Renuka had been rising from the earth — but the moment he looked, she stopped. Only her head had emerged.
She remains as she stopped — head only — worshipped ever since.
Alternative version: Parashurama decapitated his mother on his father’s orders (testing obedience). She was later restored to life — but the head is enshrined where it fell.
Both legends lead to the same idol — the head of the mother, worshipped by her warrior son’s devotees for 800 years.
