Murudeshwar Temple Darshan Timings 2026 — Gopuram Lift, Shiva Statue & Complete Guide

From the 18th floor of the 20-storey Gopuram — reached by a single elevator ride for ₹10 — the Arabian Sea stretches in three directions, a 37-metre Shiva statue gleams in the morning sun below you, and the coast of Karnataka curves away north and south. This is Murudeshwar: India’s only temple where you reach the top of the Gopuram by lift, look down at the world’s second-tallest Shiva statue, and see the ocean from all three sides. It is simultaneously a pilgrimage site, an architectural record-holder, and one of the most visually spectacular spots in South India.

The Gopuram Lift — India’s Only Temple Elevator

The 20-storey Raja Gopuram (237–249 feet) is not just one of India’s tallest temple towers — it is the only gopuram in India with a working elevator.

Detail Information
Height 237–249 feet (20 storeys)
Lift access Ground to 18th floor
Ticket ₹10–₹20/person
View from top 360° — Shiva statue + Arabian Sea on 3 sides + Karnataka coastline

What you see from the 18th floor:

  • The 37-metre Shiva statue directly below — the only angle where you look DOWN at Shiva
  • Arabian Sea stretching north, south, and west
  • The temple complex and Kanduka Hill
  • On clear days: Netrani Island visible in the distance

This is the most unique view in Karnataka — and at ₹10, arguably the best value viewpoint in India.

The 37-Metre Shiva Statue

The Shiva statue at Murudeshwar is the world’s second-tallest Shiva statue — 37 metres (123 feet) — after the Kailashnath Mahadev Statue in Sanga, Nepal (33.7m base to top — total 108m).

Detail Information
Height 37 metres (123 feet)
Rank World’s 2nd tallest Shiva statue
Facing South — overlooking the Arabian Sea
Design Lord Shiva in sitting meditation posture
Material Reinforced concrete and white paint
Built RN Shetty Trust
Illumination Night lighting — visible from sea

Sparkling at sunrise: The statue is positioned so that the first light of dawn strikes it directly — causing it to appear to sparkle. Arriving at 6:00 AM (temple opening) gives you this view.

Cave Museum — Atma Linga Story

Behind and below the Shiva statue, a Cave Museum contains life-sized sculptures depicting the story of the Atma Linga — the mythological connection between Murudeshwar and the Ramayana.

Detail Information
Entry ₹10–₹20
Duration 20–30 minutes
Content Life-sized scenes — Ravana, Ganesha, Atma Linga story
Photography Allowed inside

The Atma Linga Story: Ravana, the demon-king of Lanka, performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva and received the Atma Linga — Lord Shiva’s immortal life-force — to take back to Lanka. But Lord Vishnu arranged for Ganesha to trick Ravana into placing the Linga on the ground (it could never be lifted again once placed).

Ravana, furious, tore off the covering cloth of the Linga. A piece of that cloth landed here — at what is now Murudeshwar. Hence Lord Shiva’s presence in this form at this coastal location.
